Microsoft Job Posting Confirms Xbox LIVE Windows Mobile Phones [Microsoft]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 30th, 2009
I'm surprised it's taken this long, to be honest. Microsoft's posted a job offer, seeking a Principle Program Manager, who can "bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile."
Based at their Redmond HQ, the right person for the job will "focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences "LIVE Enabled" through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences."
I imagine to do all that, they'll be needing some top-notch Windows Mobile handsets, and really the Snapdragon-powered HTC HD2 is the only device on the market so far capable of doing it. Not that it at all resembles a device targeted at Xbox gamers. Give me a Zune phone any day of the week. [Microsoft via Engadget]

Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 30th, 2009
The hints were already pretty strong on this one, but now Microsoft has come right out and said it, albeit in a job posting -- the Xbox Live gaming platform is extending beyond the console and specifically onto WinMo phones. Seeking a Principal Program Manager who would be responsible for bringing "Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile," Redmond is particularly interested in "avatar integration, social interaction, and multi-screen experiences." That leaves an awful lot of room for imagination as to how the two modes of gaming will complement each other, but at least we now (sort of) know that it's going to happen.[Thanks, Jessy]

Microsoft | Email this | Comments Dealzmodo, Xbox Edition: $20 Live Subs, $50 Walmart Gift Cards, Amazing Bundle Deals [Dealzmodo]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 26th, 2009
Any Xbox purchase at Walmart will get you a $50 store gift card. That's a good deal on its own, but the bundle deals available on their website are downright unbelievable. Plus Sears has an 12-month Live subscriptions for $20:
For either $260 or $360 (depending on if you get the Arcade or Elite), you get:
• An Xbox (duh)
• 2 games (including selections like Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2)
• 12 Months of Xbox Live
• A $50 Walmart gift card
By my math, that's about $160 of stuff (assuming two $60 games and $40 for the Live sub) thrown in for $10 over the price of a barebones Xbox (if you subtract the value of the $50 gift card from the bundle price).
If you've already got an Xbox and need to renew your Live subscription, Sears has a 12-month sub for $20. That's the cheapest I've ever seen it.
If you're tempted, I'd jump on these quick. They're too good to last. [I4U News, Cheap Ass Gamer (bundle), Cheap Ass Gamer (Live sub)]
Goodbye N64 Kid, Hello Xbox 360 Kid [Christmas]

The joy experienced on Christmas morning is wonderful, to a point. If you take it too far, however, you end up looking crazy. And just think of the meltdown he'll have when he gets his first RROD! [Funzine.nl via TDW]

Ben Heck Forums | Email this | Comments Drunk Old Woman: “Stop Playing Xbox!” Young Boy: “No!” Woman: *Stabstabstab* [Xbox]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 23rd, 2009
Sadly normal: Guys stabbing each other or shooting their parents over videogames. Unusual: Old woman stabbing young boy over videogames.
A 55-year-old woman taking care of a 13-year-old boy apparently got drunk, and when he wouldn't stop playing Xbox 360, she hit him over the head, and then stabbed him in the stomach with a kitchen knife. She stays he stabbed himself.
Miraculously, she didn't get any jail time, just 300 hours of community service, presumably not in a youth center. [Scotsman via MaxConsole, Image via the rhumb line/Flickr]
To Catch an Xbox Live Predator [Xbox Live]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 21st, 2009
Halo fanboys aren't the only creeps on Xbox Live: 27-year-old Edward Stout was convincted of seducing a 15-year-old girl over Xbox Live and then driving 30 hours nonstop to meet and have sex with her.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but it's a pretty sobering reminder of why parents should pay attention to how their kids play games. The usual concern is violence in the games themselves and dumb kids blithely screaming "fag!" at each other, but there are obviously way worse things out there.
I know MySpace purges known sex offenders and many states require them to register all online identities, including Live gamertags, but I've never heard of any particular campaigns where Xbox Live went after them, so I'd be curious what kind of safeguards they have in place, if any. Microsoft Beats Xbox to Pieces for Getting an RRoD [Microsoft]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 15th, 2009
Nic H tells us that this is how his Xbox was returned after being sent to Nurse Microsoft. If that's really true, then it looks like Microsoft is getting brutal on Xboxes that dare get an RRoD.
Geez. What the hell is Microsoft using to punish misbehaving Xboxes? This thing looks worse than the one attacked by a crazy chick and a golf club. But we're certain that if Nic contacts Microsoft and shows them these photos of his naughty Xbox, they're sure to send him a replacement. Possibly even one that works. (Provided, of course, that this damage wasn't caused by Nic when he got the unit back, unrepaired, or by yet another nutty girlfriend.) [Flickr via Nic H]
Whatever You Do This Christmas, Don’t Buy a Japanese Child a Console [Infographic]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on December 8th, 2009
PS3? Wii? Xbox 360? If you were to buy any of these systems for a Japanese child this Christmas, they'd be sorely disappointed. Game consoles are the LAST thing on their list—literally. So what do they want?
According to a recent poll (results above/translation below) of Japanese children 12 and under, they really want...
1. Video game software (over 450 kids said this)
2. Pretty Cure goods (over 100 kids said this)
3. Anpanman goods
4. Books (picture book, book, illustrated encyclopedia)
5. Kamen Rider goods
6. Bicycle
7. Toy car
8. Clothes
9. Stuffed animal
10. Video game console
Since many kids have consoles, they just want video games now—that's fair. But clothes? What self-respecting child under 13 wants clothes?? And have you actually ever seen a picture of Anpanman?
