Walt Mossberg leaks the BlackBerry Storm 2
Well, well, looks like Unkie Walt accidentally programmed his calendar to publish a combined preview of the Motorola CLIQ and the BlackBerry Storm 2 a little earlier than everyone else. Nothing particularly insightful on the CLIQ, but Mossy says RIM's latest is a big improvement over the original Storm -- mostly because of the revamped touchscreen, which provides "faster, smoother typing." Yep, that's pretty much what we were expecting. Walt's also high on the inclusion of WiFi and the portrait-mode keyboard, but ain't nothing gonna make that BlackBerry browser any good, and the big guy says the touch interface still feels tacked to the rapidly-aging BlackBerry OS. So Walt -- now that you've confirmed RIM and Verizon's big holiday launch, what can you tell us about pricing and availability? "Likely to appear in November at around $200," you say? Thanks, buddy. You're always so dependable. Video that we took of a broken Storm 2 prototype in May after the break, tons of pics in the gallery

It’s True, Anything Is Possible [Blockquote]

On the list of things I believed I would never, ever read, Walt Mossberg, of the Walt Street Journal, saying this about Windows doesn't fall very far behind a long op-ed by Glenn Beck describing Obama's healthcare reform as "brilliant."

Walt, after all, is the basis for this. And this. Microsoft should be very proud, or we should all be very scared. [WSJ]

Mossberg Recommends Illegal Use of Snow Leopard Install Disc [Apple]

I was surprised by one line in Walt Mossberg's otherwise predictable review of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard:

"But here's a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."

I know Apple's PR people are having a heart attack right now reading that. They don't like it when influential journalists suggest violations of the EULA. In fact, they generally label that stuff as "illegal," and I am sure many lawyers would agree that it is.

So, is this Mossberg ripping open his shirt, tying a bandana around his head and saying, "Ahoy mateys, the rules were meant to be keel-hauled!" Or is this a slip-up he's going to have to apologize for—or at least qualify with an explanation—in the morning? Is it a great tip, or is he telling every Tiger user to steal $140 out of the mouth of Steve Jobs? We'll keep an eye out for the answer. [AllThingsD]

Update: Apparently NYT's David Pogue also supports this breach of EULA (or is perhaps using a funny way to report EULA crashers to Apple?):

Three Years Later, Newspapers Start With The “Wii” Jokes [High Comedy]

I'll give the WSJ a pass on running their Motion Plus review a week behind, because it's a pretty good one. But a faux-unintentional "Wii" pun, in 2009? Get with the program! (Disclaimer: I giggled, like a child.) [WSJ]

Walt Mosspuppet: “Gizmodo Makes Me Want to Vomit in My Mouth!” [Blockquote]

Walt Mossberg, that wrinkly goateed goblin hired by the Wall Street Journal for some reason, is known as the world's most powerful Apple fanboy, at least to him. The latest Mosspuppet video, featuring Muppet Mossberg, includes a not-so-friendly Gizmodo shout-out.

This is maybe a little insidery for those who don't read other tech journalism besides Giz (and really, why would you?), but Mossberg is known for playing up his close connection with Steve Jobs for product previews, being vastly inferior to the New York Times' David Pogue, and using the word "iPhone" more often than "Pre" in his supposed hands-on article about the Palm Pre. This video is a pretty spot-on skewering, though I'm no doubt swayed by my deep and unabashed love of all things Muppet. Interestingly, Walt doesn't actually sound like that in real life, favoring more of a traditional nasally nerd whine. But if you've only read his articles and never heard his voice, you imagine him sounding more like the puppet, so job well done.

The best part of the video? "I'm Walt Mossberg. Shut up!" Genius. [Rant Puppet via Fake Steve]
