We weren't sure exactly what Beyonce, David Goes to the Dentist and Chocolate Rain all had in common, but VIZIO squeezed them all into its Super Bowl ad. Still striving to remake its reputation from being merely a cheap HDTV manufacturer to a premium one offering lots of features, the ad (embedded after the break) shows how it's bringing "the best of the internet" with VIZIO Internet Apps. We still need to see if its picture quality will measure up and whether the widget experience has gotten any better (read: faster) in 2010 to be truly convinced, but a slick ad never hurt.

VIZIO Internet App HDTVs launch later this year, for less than you might expect

Sure VIZIO only just showed off new updates in its high end XVT series, but it's already planning the next generation of LCDs with VIZIO Internet Apps included. Packing widget functionality, 802.11n wireless networking and slider QWERTY Bluetooth remote, the SV422XVT, SV472XVT and VF552XVT Connected HDTVs are coming home in November, October and December, respectively. Already on deck to serve up content for your widgets are Vudu, Revision3, Facebook, Twitter, Rhapsody, Blockbuster OnDemand, Showtime, Flickr and more. The biggest surprise? There's apparently no price premium planned for these features, with the 55-inch clocking in at the same $2,199 price as the model it's replacing, though the 47-inch jumps $200 over the previous edition to $1,699, while adding the local dimming LED backlit technology previously reserved for the 55-inch. The 42-inch will be the first and cheapest available at $1,199 (sans LED) -- we'll see if that bar is low enough to get viewers to jump into the internet-connected display future.

Vizio Enters LED TV Wars: $2199 55-Inch VF551XVT Coming In September [HDTV]

Vizio's feeling confident enough about their VF551XVT 55-inch LED-backlit TV they're showing it off against Samsung sets now (though these kind of fights are rarely fair) and offering some harder specs.

The price has creeped up $200 from what they'd announced in January to $2199, and the date's slipped a bit to the tail-end of summer: Vizio's promising late August/early September. The TV uses 960 white LEDs in 80 clusters for backlighting (vs. a tri-color or edge-lit LED setup), so we're interested to see how it'll do against some of the other affordable local-dimming TVs using white LEDs, since it's at least $200 cheaper.

In the comparison shot here, the VF551XVT (right side) is stacked against an unnamed edge-lit Samsung LED set (left side). Supposedly both have been color calibrated, though the Samsung running in "movie mode" was seriously blown out, and the Vizio is running in "home mode," so make of it what you will. (Or rather, not much.)

If you wait until December, for the same price you can get the same set running their version of Yahoo's widget platform, which has a bunch of new widgets like Rhapsody and Twitter. Amazon streaming video was up and running, though a bit slow to start—presumably it'll get better by launch.
