Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Google all respond to FCC’s ETF inquiry
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on February 24th, 2010
All of the players roped into the FCC's early termination fee inquiry -- T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and Google -- have met the Fed's February 23 deadline for responding, and needless to say, you could destroy a small forest with the amount of paperwork that's been sent back to Washington. The majority of the inquiry focused on carriers' ETF pricing structure and whether there are different ETFs involved based on the device a customer chooses, and the subtleties in the differences between answers from different carriers are pretty fascinating.T-Mobile seems resolute that a single $200 ETF is the way to go and emphasizes that its customers can avoid the fee altogether by going with an Even More Plus plan, while Sprint says that it "continue[s] to evaluate the market" with regard to a multiple ETF setup. Google, meanwhile, is quick to note that it's just dropped its $350 Equipment Recovery Fee down to $150, though that amount still effectively represents the only device in T-Mobile's subsidized lineup that commands a grand total ETF greater than $200 upon cancellation -- but it gets even better later on when they get snippy for being lumped in with carriers on the inquiry and remind the FCC that the ERF reduction had been in the planning stages prior to the inquiry being issued. At any rate, they note that the ERF isn't intended as a revenue stream -- rather, it's a way to recoup the losses Google incurs when T-Mobile asks for its commission back if a customer cancels within 120 days (as you might imagine, T-Mobile conveniently fails to mention this point in its own reply).
Verizon -- which effectively triggered this whole mess by introducing its two-tier ETF -- basically echoes much of what it said in its last response, a surprising move considering the Commission's general displeasure with it, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of reaction it garners this time around. AT&T takes perhaps the most pragmatic approach through most of its response, answering the FCC's questions very matter-of-factly, but goes into a great deal of depth rationalizing early termination fees at the tail end and takes the opportunity to remind everyone that they've offered both commitment-free month-to-month and prepaid service for many years.
Something tells us this isn't the last we've heard on the subject, but for the time being, check out everyone's responses in the galleries below (more after the break).
[Thanks, Dan P.]

BGR | Email this | Comments AT&T Moves Goal Post In Latest Luke Wilson 3G Commercial [Commercials]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on January 3rd, 2010
With the new year you might have expected an end to the retaliatory Luke Wilson AT&T versus Verizon coverage map ads. You expect wrong. Here's a new one, now with revised numbers and a new blazer!
You see, while it is indeed a completely new commercial, the data advertised within experiences a subtle change. One that centers on 3G. Now the AT&T commercial showcases that the 3G network covers 230 million Americans, keyword 3G.
For the before we must go to the video tape:
Just a subtle change, and I only point it out today with the hope that it will inspire someone, somewhere, to parody these commercials, post haste. If they don't, I fear we may have experience Luke Wilson and his never-ending collection of tweed blazers for all of 2010 as well. Editor's Note: Clarified the subtle numbers change above. Thanks for the comment. [CNET]
Hey Look, Verizon Wireless Was Shipping Out Free Droid Battery Covers [Free Stuff]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on January 3rd, 2010
Did your Motorola Droid battery cover slip off into the night on New Year's Eve, never to be seen again? Did several of your memories from that evening do the same? Well, sorta good news, bad news: I can kind of help with the former.
You see, Verizon Wireless was offering free (free!) battery cover replacements on their website. The inventory sold out quick, surprise, but maybe they'll have more soon. Normally these little guys go for about $5 plus shipping.
Check their website for more info. [Phonearena via Ubergizmo]

BGR | Email this | Comments Palm Pre and Pixi “Plus” Coming to Verizon, and Soon [Rumor]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 30th, 2009
The Palm Pre is coming to Verizon early next year. We know this. But this morning, BGR gives us something new to be excited about: The Pixi’s apparently coming to Verizon as well, and both models get a (titular?) upgrade.
Verizon’s lineup, according to BGR’s tipster, will consist of the Palm Pre Plus (codenam: Russell) and Palm Pixi (codename: Romo), which apparently look exactly like their non-plus predecessors, and will both run the currentl version of webOS, 1.3.5, at launch—a fact that jibes with the previously-announced “early next year” launch time, since Palm’s been updating the OS at a steady clip.
So anyway, what’s “Plus” about these phones? It could just be change in moniker, engineered by Palm and Verizon to inject a little energy into their existing lineup, but I’d expect something more more substantive: a faster processor, larger battery and in the case of the Pre, reengineered keyboard are all plausible guesses. Whatever it means, please, Palm, please don’t tell me your CES keynote is just going to be a glorified carrier announcement. Palm needs new hardware. We need new hardware. Hardware! Ungghhhhhhhh. Palm smartphone pops up in WiFi certification database: is this Verizon’s Pre?
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 29th, 2009
Look, let's not beat around the bushes -- Verizon Wireless will one day stock Palm's Pre. It's a rather well documented fact, and at this point the only real question is "when?" Judging by a mysterious Wi-Fi Certificate that just popped up, we're beginning to think that the waiting period is nearly up, and with CES 2010 happening in a week, there's hardly a better time for us to really start believing. If you'll recall, Sprint's Pre snagged a Wi-Fi Certificate number of P100EWW, and just this summer we spotted a few leaked Palm devices within VZW documents with "P101" and "P121" monikers; lo and behold, the certificate for this elusive dual-mode (WiFi and cellular) smartphone boasts a P101EWW label. We aren't trying to read too deeply between the lines or anything, but if this isn't a Pre destined for Big Red, we're eager to know what kind of new mobile Palm has lined up for its presser at CES.[Thanks, Rehman]
