Notebook Review (1), (2) | | Email this | Comments Laptops in the Year 2000 Were the Smartphones of Today [Decades]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 31st, 2009
Now I want you to close your eyes and squint really hard. Because I'm going to tell you about a time that feels ancient, a time when Sony made some of the baddest laptops around.
Way before the internet made the idea plausible, Sony was ripping optical drives out of laptops to make them as portable as possible. One such computer, the $1,500 Sony VAIO PCG-SRX99 (circa 2001), weighed just 27.6lbs and made do with a 10-inch screen.
Inside, it had plenty of power, an 850MHz Pentium III-M, 256MB of RAM, and 802.11b for wireless networking (if you could find a wireless network, that is). Plus it had 20GB of storage, FireWire and even one USB port.
(I'd mention that it ran XP, but that part is a bit too familiar for nostalgic comfort.)
Today, the closest analog to the PCG-SRX99 is a netbook. For about $300 and a weight just shy of 3lbs, you can score a system that, from the outside, is remarkably similar. And on the inside, its clock speed has about doubled, plus there's anywhere between 4x and 8x the amount of RAM and storage.
But if you were willing to look a bit beyond skin deep, I'd argue that the contemporary smartphone is more similar to the PCG-SRX99 than the netbooks of today. Take the iPhone 3GS. In terms of sheer tech specs, it's pretty much a midrange smartphone...and it's about identical to our retro Vaio.
The 3GS has a 600MHz processor and an identical amount of RAM to the PCG-SRX99—256MB. And it holds anywhere from 16 to 32GB in flash storage. Amenities like Wi-Fi (faster 802.11g). Turn to a company like HTC, and you can double the RAM while including a processor as fast as 1GHz.
Still, while Sony's Vaio PCG-SRX99 couldn't fit in our pocket, we've championed its form in an entire wave of cheap, portable computers today. Oh, and that whole ditching the optical drive idea? Sony spotted that trend a mile away. [Product Page and Review]

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 24th, 2009
The Vaio X, aside from being thin and light, is notoriously difficult to mod — simply put, there’s not much room in there to play around! Besides, when you’ve spent well over a grand for a machine, you’re not necessarily going to be gung-ho about digging in with your soldering gun. Still, when InsanelyMac forum member Asama was struck by inspiration (in the form of a Vaio P OS X image) he followed his heart — and, much to the world’s amusement, it installed on the Vaio X with few complications. Sure, it wasn’t a flawless operation: the WiFi card is unsupported (as you probably guessed) but, that said, this is definitely an item of note for all the Hackintosh freaks in attendance. Indeed we’re looking forward to seeing Psystar get sued over a similar hack at some future junction. Get a closer look after the break.

Micro PC Talk | Email this | Comments Sony applies next-gen snowflake tech to boost VAIO W’s appeal
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 17th, 2009
When Sony’s VAIO W netbook was released, we said the company would “have to do better than put a pretty face on a vanilla set of innards to get our next five Benjamins.” So what has the company done to raise the appeal of its little netbook? Boosted the processor? Added a big SSD? Lowered the price? Nah, it went ahead and painted some snowflakes on the lid. Pretty though they may be they still hide the same 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 LCD, 1.6GHz Atom, and 1GB of RAM. There are some improvements: storage is upped a bit, a 250GB HDD instead of 160, and it now includes Windows 7 Starter instead of XP. And there are snowflakes. Still $499. Get yours before they melt!

Verizon getting a little VAIO P to join its netbook offerings
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 4th, 2009
Motorola's DROID is just a few days away from dropping on Verizon, but why pay $299 (minus $100 rebate) for that when you could instead pay $299 (possibly also minus $100) for a fully-featured definitely non-netbook VAIO P? Yes, Sony's littlest ultraportable looks to be coming to VZW, popping up on a test page in a configuration with 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium. Seemingly (and curiously) no SSD versions will be on offer, possibly to keep down on costs, as the subsidized $299 price is quite a bit lower than the $800 or more you'd be looking to buy one new -- not to mention a good bit more appealing than the other netbooks Verizon currently has on offer for the same price. Mind you, that two year wireless broadband contract won't pay for itself...[Via GadgetMix.com]

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 3rd, 2009
Sony's updated range of "Signature Collection" laptops includes this flashy space-themed Vaio FW. The 16.4-incher starts at $810, which gets you Windows 7, a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB storage, and 512MB ATI 4650 graphics.
At that price, you'll only get a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, but specs scale all the way up to Blu-ray, a 3.0GHz Core 2 Duo T9900 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 500GB hard disk. The FW can also be picked up without the Nebula motif for the same price. [Sony Style]
