I’m so Passé That I Don’t Know 95% of These Social Networking Sites [Timeline]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on December 4th, 2009
I met my first serious girlfriend after my first divorce—yes, there are more of both—through a proto-Facebook created at Google. It was 2004, and it’s name was Orkut. But social networks go back to 1995.
It all started with Classmates.com, which apparently has 50,000,000 users now. On the top of the pyramid is Facebook and its 300 million users, followed by MySpace’s 263 million. In the middle you have a huge constellation of sites, most of which I just can’t recognize. Trombi? Vampirefreaks? Bigadda? Cafemom? Geni? Itsmy? Qzone? Xanga?
Please, stop saying words. [Focus—Thanks David Keyes]

Ins and Outs: Should your gadget Tweet?
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on September 17th, 2009
We’re pleased to welcome back Jeremy Toeman’s Ins and Outs, a column on entertainment technology and broad trends impacting the future of consumer electronics.

Twitter, the 140-character “micro-blogging service,” is a great way for people to share wisdom, ask for advice, and inform lots of strangers about the phenomenal sandwich you are having for lunch. In the past year, Twitter’s grown from the playgrounds of the high-tech crowd in Silicon Valley to the likes of Oprah, Ashton Kutcher, Lance Armstrong, and Josh’s friend Jimmy Fallon. And now it’s coming to a gadget near you. Which prompts the question: should your gadget tweet, and if so, why?
Three of the more mainstream gadgets to gain Twitter integration include the Xbox 360 (coming this fall), the FiOS set-top box (pictured above), and the Sonos music system (now in beta testing). Each of these devices allows their users to send out updates via Twitter, and the Xbox 360 and FiOS box lets people see their friends’ tweets as well. While products like the SqueezeBox, Slingbox, and Nabaztag helped usher in the first generation of “connected” electronics, we’re clearly at the dawn of these devices as bi-directional connectivity and communication products.

Switched On: How Motorola’s Cliq could start to drag
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on September 16th, 2009
All smartphones must decide where they want to integrate and where they want to provide a platform for innovation. RIM, for example, has integrated what is still the best e-mail management application into the BlackBerry (although its lack of HTML email and IMAP support are real drawbacks these days) and Apple has integrated both its own Safari browser as well as services such as Google Maps. But now companies such as Palm and Motorola are integrating social networks, and that could have some downsides.

Archbishop Cautions Texting, Email Could Lead to Suicide [Texting]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on August 2nd, 2009
He stopped short of calling texting and social networks the devil's playground, but nevertheless Archbishop Vincent Nichols warned us all in an interview today that these "dehumanizing" practices can often lead to suicide.
That's right. When little Timmy gets Susie to "sext" him nudie pics in class, not only are both parties degrading the moral fabric of our civilized society, they're also contributing to the growing number of transient relationships Nichols feels is slowly killing us all.
"I think there's a worry that an excessive use, or an almost exclusive use of text and emails means that as a society we're losing some of the ability to build interpersonal communication that's necessary for living together and building a community," he said in a Sunday interview that was probably not conducted over email or IM.
While I agree that anything can be abused if done in excess, the suicide note seems a bit alarmist and anti-technology, even for the Catholic church. Then again, I've (luckily) never had the misfortune to know someone who was driven to suicide because I un-friended them on Facebook.
That said, we've seen some freaky cases where crazy shit's happened on these networks... maybe the ol' Archbishop has a point. What do you think? [Reuters]

This whole Facebook thing is going way too far, which is why Satan uses Twitter. [Thanks David]
