Remainders – The Good, Bad and Ugly Things We Didn’t Post (and Why) [Remainders]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 31st, 2009
You say remainders, I say reminders. Reminders that online shopping can be fun but also dangerous. Reminders that big-name companies like Polaroid can falter while less big-name companies like jWIN flourish. And a reminder to let goats sing their song.

Hacker Extraordinaire
Albert Gonzalez, a 28 year old Floridian, pleaded guilty to the largest credit card theft in American history yesterday. What exactly does that entail, you ask? Something to the tune of 130 million stolen credit cards. He won't be sentenced until March, when he's expected to pick up somewhere between 17 and 25 years. That's about one year for every six million cards stolen. Doesn't quite seem like enough time when you put it that way, does it? [PhysOrg]

Poor Polaroid
jWIN, purveyors of various crappy electronics, have secured an exclusive deal to sell products under the Polaroid brand. This isn't a great look for anyone: jWIN will sully the Polaroid brand by slapping the name on some second-rate laptop cases and cleaning supplies, and Polaroid, well, they're the ones letting themselves get sullied. We just hope they make good on their promise to go back to making high quality low quality film in 2010. [Engadget]

Satisfied.com
Online shoppers were happier than ever this holiday season, according to a study that factored in price and availability of merchandise, site layout, and other variables. Apple and Newegg joined Amazon and Netflix in the top tier of e-tailers with ratings of "excellent," while Neiman Marcus and Circuit City ranked lowest, which, in the case of the latter, is still better than their brick and mortar stores are doing, in a sense. On the whole, online shoppers' satisfaction was a 79 out of 100: a C+. That means our materialism is passing but not excelling like it could be. There's always next year. [New York Times]

Usher Feat. Goat
Who knew there was a site designed specifically to facilitate YouTube mash-ups? Who knew that following Ryan Schreiber's Twitter would be so fruitful? And who could have possibly known that the G.O.A.T. R&B background vocalist is...a goat. Don't think, just click. [YouTubeDoubler via Twitter]
How Online Retailers Read Your Mind

The tricks and strategies brick-and-mortar retailers use to lure customers into buying haven’t gone away online-they’ve just gotten more sophisticated.
Robovie II Helps You Load Up On Beer and Frozen Pizza at the Supermarket [Robots]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 16th, 2009
I have to admit, a robot that would help you buy groceries at the supermarket would be awesome. But I think that Robovie II could be even better.
Currently, Robovie is designed to help the elderly complete their shopping rounds. At home, users enter their list into a special mobile device that Robovie senses upon entering the store. Robovie then greets the user and guides him/her through the store helping them find, carry and remember items from their list.
I can't tell you how many times I have wished that supermarkets had some sort of robot or GPS system that would guide me to wherever the hell they keep their pizza sauce and burrito shells. And carrying my groceries for me—well that's just a bonus. The whole thing might be even better if the larger carts were equipped with some sort of system like this, instead of a free-standing robot. I would love it even more if it scanned and weighed my purchases and allowed me to swipe a card instead of standing in line at the checkout. [Robot Watch via Pink Tentacle via PopSci]
Target’s remote control gift card puts normal ones to shame
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on December 2nd, 2009
We’ve been cranking on our holiday gift guide series, but if you’ve already decided that there’s someone in your life who you simply can’t buy for, here’s a suggestion: snag ‘em one of these. Following up on last year’s blockbuster camera gift card, Target is offering up what’s believed to be the planet’s first remote control gift card for the 2009 holiday season. Put simply, this stupendously cute Santa Mouse card actually doubles as a small toy, with the card itself acting as a remote that controls a tiny mouse. Online gift givers will have to drop at least $25 in order to claim one, though there’s a chance you could cheap out in the store just to have one of these around. Check out an all-too-brief demonstration video down in the Source link.

Target Tries To Make Gift Cards More Exciting With Remote Control [Target]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on December 1st, 2009
It isn’t much, but I have to give Target credit for trying yet another unique approach to gift cards. This time, they are attempting to make the card two gifts in one with remote control functionality.
In addition to storing money, each card can wirelessly control a tiny Christmas mouse inside a shopping cart. The mouse comes free with the purchase of each gift card, but it appears that the minimum value that can be placed on it is set at $25. Target isn’t my holiday shopping store of choice, but I can see the appeal of getting one of these in that McDonald’s Happy Meal toy sort of way. [Target via Chip Chick via OhGizmo]
