Dell | Email this | Comments Crew Uses Crazy Futuristic EarthRace Boat and Lasers to Fight Japanese Whalers [Boats]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 31st, 2009
Regardless of your feelings about whaling, you have to admit the fight just got a whole lot more interesting. Check out this video of a Sea-Shepherd-manned (from Whale Wars) carbon-fiber, biofuel-powered EarthRace Trimaran blinding a Japanese whaling boat with lasers.
Looks to us like the laser is mostly for warning and intimidation, which probably works considering they're zooming around in a ferocious-looking 1080-horsepower, 78-foot trimaran. The crew manning the EarthRace is the Sea Shepherd society, which you might know from Whale Wars, where they're usually getting outwitted and outgunned in a boat nowhere near as cool as this one. The MV Steve Irwin, which is the ship followed by Whale Wars, travels a maximum of 16.5 knots—this EarthRace hits 50, which actually lets them chase down and intercept whalers. [StokeReport]
Ghost Supership Can Probably Break Other Ships in Two [Ships]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 19th, 2009
The Ghost 180 reminds me of the war ships from the beginning of the 20th century. Paint it black, and Darth Vader would spend his holidays there, cruising from Málaga to the Adriatic. And splitting other yachts in two.
The 180-foot three-deck ship can fit an helicopter, and would be completed in 2010 for you and I not to enjoy. [Super Yacht Design via Born Rich]
Ikkar Transforming Yacht Requires Supervillain Spandex Suit [Ships]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 16th, 2009
I'm glad that the Ikkar—a yacht that can open its hull until it looks like a trimaran—is just a really sleek concept. After all, the only people who can actually build it are Dr.Doom, Magneto, and Larry Ellison.
I wish it was real, however. The Ikkar allows for 50 passengers, with suites that have terraces facing the ocean. Stationary or at low speed, the Ikkar can open its hull sideways, deploying two large dock surfaces that allow people to walk and enjoy the sun. On the top, a solar sail—equipped with photovoltaic cells—grabs energy to help power the ship. Inside, a teleporting machine can transport you anywhere in the planet, while an anti-matter cannon could evaporate any enemies out of the water.
I'm just making this thing even better, ok? [Luxury Issues via Born Rich]
Ultra-cheap Archos 1 Vision goes on sale across the pond
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 9th, 2009
Need a relatively respectable DAP to shove in your next pair of gym shorts, huh? Yeah, we've all been there. If you happen to live on the right side of the Atlantic, Archos' 1 Vision just might be your ticket, as the diminutive, no-frills player is now available to purchase for the tidy sum of £24.99 ($41). For those in need of a refresher, this one's packing 4GB of internal storage, support for MP3, WMA, APE, WAV and FLAC files, compatibility with JPEG and BMP files and even an audio recording function for vocally jotting down grocery lists. There's still no word on a US release, but we're told this is the season for hope. Can we get a confirmation on that? Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 9th, 2009
If you’re scouting a nettop that’ll hit your doorstep prior to those Christmas bells ringing, you’ll want to look elsewhere. That said, those with plenty of time to spare may want to consider ASRock’s ION 330HT-BD, particularly if you just can’t seem to stop renting Blu-ray Discs from Netflix. The box has just landed on Amazon with a $588.99 price tag and an admittedly frightening “usually ships within 1 to 4 months” warning, and if you’re no fan of BD (liar!), the standard 330HT is in the same boat for $458.99.

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 8th, 2009
Candidly speaking, we can't honestly envision too many of you fine folks running out and purchasing one of Creative's new ZEN X-Fi2 portable media players given the availability of such robust alternatives. That said, we'd be remiss of our duties if we didn't point out that the PMP which shocked us at IFA is now on sale directly from Creative. $129.99 buys you an 8GB model, while $179.99 nets you 16GB and $229.99 provides 32GB. We know -- that 3-inch LCD and integrated FM tuner look good from afar, but remember kids, it's all about the UI. [Thanks, Tyler]
