R2-D2 statue comes with its own set of tools

ultimate-r2-d2-statueOnce again, I find myself reporting on a other piece of Star Wars merchandise. Last time, it was the Millennium Falcon bed, and now it is this Ultimate R2-D2 statue.

The statue is a 1:6 model of everyone’s favorite astromech droid, and it is hand-painted and stamped with a “limited edition” label. According to the editor of Entertainment Earth, the site where you can order this statue, it has “insane detail”.

Also included is special tools including a mechanical gripper, periscope scanner, tiny buzzsaw, and five others. I find it odd that none of my sources say what the five other tools are, but I’m guessing that none of these tools would actually be working. After all, if the model is 1:6 to scale, then surely the tools must not be the right size for human hands.

Still, this leads me to a very pleasant thought. Is there any way that we could make this like the remote controlled R2D2 sort of like the projector from Nikko. Make this remote-control Artoo life-sized, and then put compartments in it for tools.

That way, if you need a tool, just program Artoo to get it for you. Better yet, make a control so the tool will just come out and do the job for you. This is why someone needs to build a real R2-D2. Surely we have the technology now.

Confirmed: R2-D2 Finally Discovered In Star Trek [Star Trek]

At last, here's the droid we were all looking for. In this frame you can clearly see R2-D2's cameo in JJ Abrams' Star Trek. This time there's absolutely no doubt about it: It's been confirmed by ILM.

Can you see him floating there, on the left, right below the huge arrow that I also missed when I saw the movie? That's obviously him, a fact that has been confirmed to me by one of the movie's sequence supervisors at Industrial Light & Magic—the same guy who said this previous sighting was just the shuttle.

I don't know about you but, right now, I feel like what I imagine my dog Jones feels whenever I take his collar off and scratch him on the neck. Oh yesyeyeyeyes. YES. Harf. Woof.

R2-D2 Caught In Transformers 2 [Transformers]

ILM Special effects supervisor Scott Farrar said that R2-D2 had a cameo in Transformers 2. My bet was that she was behind Megan Fox's ass at one point, giving her a back rub. With his special back rubbing, vibrating thingapparatus.

Actually, according to this frame captured from the Blu-ray edition, our favorite astromech appears 2 hours 17 minutes and 52 seconds in the movie, during the merge of Jetfire's parts to Optimus Prime.

It looks like the real thing to me. Those look like his three feet, as he is flying away from the camera. They are too symmetric to be a piece of random metal, and I can see his shape. But then again, I've been wrong before. [Transformers Live]

Awesome R2-D2 Houses Eight Game Consoles and Projector [Star Wars]

For the love of the holy underpants of Yoda! This R2-D2 is the most amazing astromech mod yet. Created by Popular Science reader Brian De Vitis, it holds eight consoles, a sound system, and a projector!

Brian first took an R2-D2 shaped cooler and modified it to make it look more realistic. He then gutted the consoles to rearrange the controllers inside so all the ports could face in the right direction. That still left enough space inside to place a projector and a sound system. Quite a feat.

I can see Dreamcast, Playstation, SNES, and Nintendo Ultra64 gamepads, but what are the rest? [The Force]

R2-D2 Appears in Transformers 2 [Robots]

Apparently Industrial Light and Magic is now inserting R2-D2 in every single movie they make. Before it was Star Trek, and according to film's visual-effects supervisor Scott Farrar, now it is Transformers 2:

There's an R2-D2 flying around in there somewhere. There's a little bit of space junk thrown in there; see if you can find it. It's a scene in the desert.

What's next? Bar2-D2 serving cocktails to Tony Stark in Iron Man 2? Hopefully, yes. [VH1 via Star Wars Blog]
