Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 29th, 2009
We're but three years removed from the US introduction of both Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3, and already the rumors are running rampant about the future iterations of both consoles. Two separate reports from Japan's Impress touch on both units, with speculation and insider information on the former suggesting that Intel could be in talks with the Big N about powering the second Wii. Hard details are obviously tough to come by, but word has it that the two are mulling a GPU / CPU combo similar to the Larrabee; granted, we'd prefer something a touch more potent in the Wii 2, but we wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo chooses the less powerful path yet again. In related news, it seems as if Sony could be looking for an alternative to its Cell CPU in the PlayStation 4, an alternative that involves some sort of "multi-core CPU." Potentially more interesting is the notion that Sony's next-gen handheld could be out before said console, which is loosely pegged for a 2013 release. We wouldn't take any of this to heart just yet, but we're pretty certain we can't stop the dreamers from going too far.Console scuttlebutt: multi-core CPU for next-gen PlayStation, Intel inside future Wii originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 07:14:00 EST. Impress (Wii), Impress (PS3) | Email this | Comments Intel unveils next generation Atom platform
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 22nd, 2009
Intel’s Atom processor has been pretty successful so far to say the least, and the current worldwide leader in processors are certainly not going to rest on their laurels – hence coming up with a next generation Intel Atom platform. This will be the first Intel processors that see the integration of graphics as well as a memory controller in the CPU, which in turn results in power reduction, smaller systems and performance jumps. This higher level of integration alongside the inclusion of 45nm manufacturing will see the average power consumption go down to 20% over the previous generation, which will certainly carve a smile on netbook manufacturers’ faces as their products will experience a longer battery life.
We can expect to see major OEMs roll out netbooks with the new Intel Atom processors within the next few weeks, so those who want to own a new netbook might want to hold off their purchases for a while more if the situation has yet to reach the urgent and critical level, as chugging along to a new processor is always much better compared to running on something older. The latest Intel Atom platform for netbooks will comprise of a new Intel Atom processor known as the N450, alongside a new low-power Intel NM10 Express Chipset. For those who are looking at entry level desktop PCs, you can choose from the Intel Atom processor D410 or the dual core D510, where it will also be paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset.
What’s the big deal about these new Atom processors, you ask? Well, one of the most significant features would be the integration of memory controller and graphics into the CPU, making it a first in the industry on x-86 chips. This results in significant cost reductions, a smaller average footprint and being more power efficient to keep in line with the green theme. We can’t wait to see what kind of desktops that will be released with this new processor, especially their design and how they would fit into everyday life.

A-Power | Email this | Comments IBM developing 10 petaflop supercomputer, Power7 to ship next year
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on December 7th, 2009
The last we heard, IBM was hard at work on its Power7 processor. Now the company's announcing that the thirty-two core chip -- and copious amounts of eDRAM -- are at the heart of its newest supercomputing project. To be housed at the University of Illinois, IBM's Blue Waters will be the largest publicly accessible supercomputer in the world when it goes online in 2011, theoretically capable of achieving 16 petaflop speeds by connecting up to 16,384 Power7 nodes, although IBM said that initially the theoretical peak performance will likely be closer to 10 petaflops -- with more realistic sustained real-world performance near one petaflop. To keep things from overheating, a system was devised that includes water-cooling for the whole rack, including the processor itself. But why should government agencies and large corporations have all the fun? According to CNET, IBM plans to ship Power7 processors with commercial server products sometime next year.IBM developing 10 petaflop supercomputer, Power7 to ship next year originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 16:59:00 EST.
