Toni Nikkanen | Email this | Comments Ask Engadget: Best Skype phone for Europe?
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on January 1st, 2010
There's nothing worse than not being able to communicate with someone when you desperately need to, so we're hoping that our readers across the pond will be able to chime in here with a little advice. If you've got something productive to add, drop it down in comments below!"My sister recently moved to Belgium. She has access to WiFi at home, so I'd like to send her a mobile phone that can run a Skype client. Requirements are WiFi, can work on Belgian / European carriers, runs Skype, and has excellent battery life. Anyone have any suggestions?"

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on January 1st, 2010
When thinking about the cost of a cellphone, we consider the phone itself and any service plans, but what about the price of misuse? How often are we finding ourselves paying an unsubsidized price to replace phones under contract?
It's just so easy to damage a phone. It slips out of your hand and crashes to the ground, gets knocked into a sink, thrown into the wash, and abused in who-knows-what other ways. The lousy part is that when you need to replace your precious gadget in the midst of a one-two-three year agreement, you're very likely to find yourself paying full retail price.
It's miserable, but it happens to even the best of us.
What we want though, is for you to 'fess up. Tell us how often you've been in this costly situation during your last two-year agreement and whether it's affected any of your buying decisions. [Thanks to Shooter for this QOTD idea!]
AT&T asks FCC to phase out landline regulations
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 31st, 2009
A day without landline phones? Some may say that's inevitable, but it looks like AT&T is now starting to try to speed things up a bit, with it recently responding to an FCC request for comments with a 32-page filing that details its position on the matter. That more or less boils down to two major requests: that the FCC eliminate the regulatory requirements that it support a landline network, and that it provide a firm deadline for phasing it out. To back up that request, AT&T has provided the FCC with a whole host of statistics that paint a bleak picture for landlines, including the fact that less than 20% of Americans rely exclusively on switched-access lines for voice service (though plenty more still use them as their primary voice service), that at least 18 million homes now use a VoIP service, and that those two numbers are fast growing in opposite directions. Needless to say, such a change would have a broad range of regulatory implications, and AT&T isn't providing answers for everything -- like exactly how it expects that last mile of users to transition away from landlines, or how to deal with issues of public safety or those with disabilities.AT&T asks FCC to phase out landline regulations originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 03:25:00 EST. GigaOM | Email this | Comments Hack The Motorola Droid, Get Wi-Fi Tethering. Simples [Phones]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 23rd, 2009
Over at DroidForums they’ve got a tutorial on how to hack your Droid to enable GUI Wi-Fi tethering, as Moto’s Android may do many things, but it stops short at hooking up with your laptop or other wireless gadget.
Modder WebAcoustics says of the hack:
“Please note that this involves rooting your phone, installing a custom recovery image, and a custom kernel. This is not for the faint of heart”
If that doesn’t intimidate you, then hop on over to DroidForums for the details. [DroidForums via The Gadgets via Engadget]
Who Would’ve Guessed We’d Ever See A Stylish Phone Charger? [Phones]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 22nd, 2009
With more smartphones being sold than ever before, it's not surprising to see plenty of innovative chargers being designed for the battery-guzzlers. This "Juice" model not only charges phones, but AA and AAA batteries too.
On either side of the device is an "air holder," where batteries can be recharged, and there's also a USB port for charging other gadgets, like your iPhone, and the AC input for charging the actual device. While it's shown up on king of the concepts site Yanko Design, it's actually going on sale in Japan and Taiwan in the first half of 2010, and then the US after that. [Nobil via Yanko Design]

Yahoo | Email this | Comments Leak: Windows Phone Ads Could Debut at CES 2010 [Microsoft]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 19th, 2009
Whoops! These photos of ad agency Crispin Porter's Job Manager shows dates for Windows Phone ad campaigns as going "live" January 4th and 8th.
Crispin Porter Co-Chairman Alex Bogusky (profiled here) posted the shot to demonstrate CP's massive project status list, which clearly lists two ad campaigns, on January 4th and 8th, for "Windows Phone," first as "Windows Phone Q3 Media Refresh" and second as "09 Windows Phone Banners." So who knows what the actual timing for these ads will be, but its a safe bet that ads will be previewed at CES in some way. (Crispin Porter, by the way, was responsible for the Seinfeld Ad campaign).
