Palm releases webOS 1.4
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on February 28th, 2010
At long last, the folks over at Palm has decided to do something about their webOS by releasing a most timely update, this time round bringing the version number up to webOS 1.4. You won’t need to make a trip to any store if you want to install the update since this will come across as an over-the-air (OTA) update, and is readily available for customers who are subscribed to the Sprint network in the US, while folks living on the other side of the pond will be able to get it as well assuming they’re under the O2 UK, O2 DE, O2 Ireland and Movistar umbrellas. As for Palm webOS smartphones which are available on other networks, expect the update to roll out in a short while. What’s so great about webOS 1.4? Well, why not head over to the extended post to find out?
webOS 1.4 introduces the ability to capture, edit, and share video, letting you upload your footage to YouTube or Facebook after making a quick edit to make you look as flattering as possible. Apart from that, you can also send those videos and images through email or MMS using but a couple of taps. With the world being such a fast paced place these days, being more productive is also another way of describing webOS 1.4 since it allows you to get more done within a shorter span of time, thanks to new features thrown into the Calendar, Phone, Messaging, and Email apps which simplify common tasks after taking into consideration feedback from their customers. Take for example, the Calendar app lets you dial a number that appears in the subject of an appointment. As for the Email app, you are now able to sort by date, sender, and subject.
Apart from that, your webOS-powered smartphone will also be the recipient of enhanced notifications, as the LED in the gesture area now lights up and pulses if you have a notification even is the display is turned off. This allows you to customize notification sounds in Messaging, Email (on an account-by-account basis), and Calendar. Additional notification sounds have been thrown in the ringtones library for a more customizable approach. Anyone given it a go yet, and how do you find it?

BGR | Email this | Comments Palm Pre and Pixi “Plus” Coming to Verizon, and Soon [Rumor]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 30th, 2009
The Palm Pre is coming to Verizon early next year. We know this. But this morning, BGR gives us something new to be excited about: The Pixi’s apparently coming to Verizon as well, and both models get a (titular?) upgrade.
Verizon’s lineup, according to BGR’s tipster, will consist of the Palm Pre Plus (codenam: Russell) and Palm Pixi (codename: Romo), which apparently look exactly like their non-plus predecessors, and will both run the currentl version of webOS, 1.3.5, at launch—a fact that jibes with the previously-announced “early next year” launch time, since Palm’s been updating the OS at a steady clip.
So anyway, what’s “Plus” about these phones? It could just be change in moniker, engineered by Palm and Verizon to inject a little energy into their existing lineup, but I’d expect something more more substantive: a faster processor, larger battery and in the case of the Pre, reengineered keyboard are all plausible guesses. Whatever it means, please, Palm, please don’t tell me your CES keynote is just going to be a glorified carrier announcement. Palm needs new hardware. We need new hardware. Hardware! Ungghhhhhhhh. Palm smartphone pops up in WiFi certification database: is this Verizon’s Pre?
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 29th, 2009
Look, let's not beat around the bushes -- Verizon Wireless will one day stock Palm's Pre. It's a rather well documented fact, and at this point the only real question is "when?" Judging by a mysterious Wi-Fi Certificate that just popped up, we're beginning to think that the waiting period is nearly up, and with CES 2010 happening in a week, there's hardly a better time for us to really start believing. If you'll recall, Sprint's Pre snagged a Wi-Fi Certificate number of P100EWW, and just this summer we spotted a few leaked Palm devices within VZW documents with "P101" and "P121" monikers; lo and behold, the certificate for this elusive dual-mode (WiFi and cellular) smartphone boasts a P101EWW label. We aren't trying to read too deeply between the lines or anything, but if this isn't a Pre destined for Big Red, we're eager to know what kind of new mobile Palm has lined up for its presser at CES.[Thanks, Rehman]
