Milestone multitouch browser ported to the Droid by a user-made patch (video)

This little nugget of software is itself still in beta, but if you can't wait for the full Milestone firmware port to climb out of alpha development, it's a good alternate route to getting your Droid dancing in the "pinch to zoom" party. Once again produced by the good folks over at AllDroid, the patch substitutes the Droid's default browser with the Milestone's multitouch capable one -- and from the feedback we're seeing it does so very cleanly and painlessly, whether you're running Android 2.0.1 or 2.1. You'll still need to root your device first, and some background reading is advisable before jumping in, but then you should be clear for take-off into the world of multitouch browsing. Multitouch Browser Comes to Droid By Way of Software Hack [Droid]

We know the Europeans have been tooling around with Droid and mutlitouch since December, but today, courtesy a hack of sorts, we Yanks can have it to, albeit for a browser only in this particular case.

All you have to do is follow about five steps over at AllDroid and it's yours. You'll need to root your phone first, of course, so this isn't really a mom and pops operation just yet. There are also a few downloads and deletions to be aware of as well.

Voila. Users report that it works just fine on version 2.1, even as a beta. [AllDroid via Redmond Pie - Thanks, Taimur]

Motorola Calgary / Droid Devour spotted in silver, Bluring it up

There's another Motorola "Calgary" device (also known as the Droid Devour) making the rounds, and this time it's showing a silver paint job and an obvious Motorola Blur home screen. Word is that the trackpad to the upper right of the keyboard is great, and the keyboard supposedly bests the Droid -- not a challenging feat, to be sure. Obviously it's headed for Verizon, and Boy Genius confirms that WiFi and GPS are onboard, but it's still a little unclear what the low-end differentiators between it and the Droid might be, outside the three megapixel camera and what appears to be a smaller, lower resolution screen.

Motorola Calgary / Droid Devour Gets Shot Up In Silver, New Info [Motorola]

Motorola making a device in more that one color? You don't say… One of our connects sent us the above photo of the Motorola Calgary / DROID Devour / Whatever, and confirmed the specifications we posted a few months back.

We're told the keyboard was "nice" and the phone itself was "easier to use" compared to the Motorola DROID. Obviously that's personal opinion, and maybe the BLUR OS simplifies things for some people, but the trackpad apparently is killer as a navigational input device. Oh? The device has Wi-Fi, GPS, a 1420mAh battery, but unfortunately no SIM card slot as it is not a global device. Whether the unit will come in multiple colors or not is not confirmed as these are still non-final units, we're told, but we'd probably bet on it being available in black as well as silver. If only they kept that RAZR-keyboard…

Picture of Motorola ‘Shadow’ leaked, inverted on Taiwanese forum

While everyone's gearing up to celebrate New Year's Eve, it seems that Motorola's busy squeezing out the last bit of rumor juice of 2009. We're looking at what's purported to be Motorola's "Shadow" (not "Mirage" as Google Translate unhelpfully suggests) -- a phone with 9mm thickness, 4.3-inch 850x484 screen (larger than the devices on the leaked roadmap), HDMI port and 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording. Not much else came out of the "tight-lipped" tipster who might've inverted the picture's colors -- see above for our fix -- but an educated guess should point to that friendly green robot (though that battery icon certainly isn't part of Android's game). Any brave souls dare to guess otherwise?

Motorola’s Rumored Superthin Android Phone Sounds Spectacular [Rumor]

We had few complaints with the Droid, and the Sholes, Occiphobic as it may be, is lustable, without a doubt. But Motorola’s alleged next phone, the .35-inch-thick, 1080p-capable Shadow/Mirage, makes Motorola’s current Android lineup look old-fashioned.

All we’ve got for now is a crude rendering and a dubiously sourced Chinese leak, but given the recent spate of Snapdragon-powered Android phones, the specs are within the realm of plausibility: crammed into the slim body, there’s a processor capable of decoding 1080p video, an 8-megapixel camera, and an HDMI port, masked by a 4.3-inch, 800 x 464 screen, as compared to the Droid’s 3.7-inch display of the same resolution.

If true, this means that there’s an Android phone that’s at least as powerful as, and thinner than, Google’s überbuzzed Nexus One sitting just over the horizon, which strikes yet another blow to the mythos of the be-all, end-all Android device. [Mobile1 via BGR]

Motorola buys Super Bowl ad spot

Looks like Motorola's fully back in the game: not only does it have the hottest Android device you can (currently) buy in the Droid, word today is that the company's dished out somewhere between $2.5 and $3 million dollars for at least one Super Bowl commercial. It's been a while since Motorola last spent so lavishly on an ad campaign, so we're super curious to see what device the ad is for -- the safe bet is obviously the Droid, but CES could bring both the AT&T-destined Backflip and Sholes Tablet, so it's all up in the air. Our main hope? The return of HELLO MOTO.

Rumor: Two New Motorola Android Phones To Be Announced Next Week [Phones]

Motorola hasn't exactly been shy with telling people how many Android phones they'll be releasing in 2010, so it's no surprise to hear that they'll be showing off "a pair of new phones" at next week's CES.

We try to not put much weight on analysts' speculations, but Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry is confident that Motorola "may announce" two new Android phones, one on AT&T, the second on Verizon. Both will have, according to him, OLED screens and a slide-out QWERTY for the AT&T model, with the same handset shunning MOTOBLUR in favour of the Google Experiences interface.

Could that AT&T model be the Backflip/Enzo we've seen leaked pics of? Though the screen doesn't sound like it's OLED, admittedly. Or perhaps the Sholes or Opus One will make a cameo next week? Stay tuned for our CES coverage, in any case. [Barron's]

Hack The Motorola Droid, Get Wi-Fi Tethering. Simples [Phones]

Over at DroidForums they’ve got a tutorial on how to hack your Droid to enable GUI Wi-Fi tethering, as Moto’s Android may do many things, but it stops short at hooking up with your laptop or other wireless gadget.

Modder WebAcoustics says of the hack:

“Please note that this involves rooting your phone, installing a custom recovery image, and a custom kernel. This is not for the faint of heart”

Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass

Corning's darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn't new -- in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing's tablets just a few months ago -- but it's still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. SmartPlanet sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola's Droid and Dell's Adamo (not to mention Cowon's S9 PMP) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays "damage-resistant." Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It's a pretty interesting read if you're into that type of thing, and yes, we did just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don't count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.
