Sony’s PlayStation motion controller patents venture into abstract realms
We've seen plenty of PlayStation motion control patents from Sony, some of them surprisingly similar to what we've actually observed of the as-yet-unnamed controller. This new one, however, gets a little odd. The basic structure seems familiar, but Sony's recently-filed patent application deals with add-ons in wild ways that not even the peripheral-happy folks at Nintendo have envisioned. Our favorite is probably the double-ender (Fig. 6B for those of you following along at home), which is probably the most assured recipe for a little brother's bloody nose to be run by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office since the longstaff was invented. So, does this mean more cash to shell out for a "full" PS3 motion control experience? We can't imagine Sony being gung-ho about that strategy in the face of the (as yet) add-on free Project Natal, but we suppose we'll just have to wait and find out.

Nyko Wii Wands get a dash of color
Just as Nintendo finally decides to bring some of that noir goodness over to the US, Nyko pops up with no less than four new colorways for its Wand Wii remote. We're no anthropologists here, but we reckon one of these new options will do a lot better in sales than the other three. All the same, with Nintendo furnishing Japan with blue and pink Wiimotes, Nyko has played it safe and followed suit. These should be hitting Walmart right about now with an MSRP of $29.99, so look out for them at your next government-sponsored Wii bowl-a-thon.

Motion Controller for PS3 coming next spring

sony-motion-controller-spring

Sony has seen the wisdom behind Nintendo’s motion control system that is employed in the Wii, helping an inferior hardware platform to achieve dominance in terms of sales across the globe due to its once-labelled “gimmicky” waggle controls. Well, they recently announced that they too, will be jumping aboard the motion control bandwagon in the near future with what looks like a simple microphone, and today we have confirmation from Sony Computer Entertainment that they will be rolling out a new Motion Controller for the PS3 as early as spring next year. Bear in mind the name Motion Controller is a temporary one as the boffins at Sony have yet to decide on a permanent name for this.

This new controller will come with high-precision, highly accurate motion sensors to help immerse yourself even more fully in whatever new game that is coming your way. Apparently, it is touted to offer a whole new entertainment experience on the PS3 but there is one drawback – you will need to have the PlayStation Eye camera before you can make use of the Motion Controller, so too bad for folks who are thinking they don’t have to fork out too much money in order to take advantage of this good news. The PlayStation Eye camera can recognize and track a user’s face in addition to voice and body motion, while sending an output of the player’s image onto the TV display. No doubt Sony will try to push this feature across to the general market as much as possible in order to generate even more buzz with hope of drawing more people to their console.

As for the new Motion Controller, it will come with a couple of motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer which is able to tell the controller’s current angle and movement which is in a firm grip of the user. The PlayStation Eye will ensure that the controller’s position is accurately tracked to its absolute position, while the sphere located on top of the controller offers visual feedback to users by changing its colors or illuminating the sphere with various patterns. Expect rumble feature to be implemented as well – guess button mashing will be a thing of the past. We’re interested to see what kind of titles will roll out that won’t be as “gimmicky” as the Wii’s. PS3 Motion Controller confirmed for next spring, finally ready for its close-ups
We've heard plenty about Sony's PS3 Motion Controller, but we hadn't actually seen a press shot of it until now. Looks pretty PlayStation-ey, wouldn't you say? Sony has also confirmed that spring 2010 is the launch window (with those rumors of a March date in Japan floating around). It can't come soon enough! At the TGS announcement Kaz Hirai reiterated that the controller will meet the "stringent" requirements of hardcore gamers -- which is always a comfort, no matter how much of that gamer-pleasing will have to come from the actual games themselves. Hit up the read link for Joystiq's live coverage of the Sony keynote from TGS!

PS3 Motion Controller launching in March?
Is your name "harborneb?" It is? Then you might be out of a job. That's the name attributed to the author of a Microsoft Word document sitting on SEGA America's official FTP site at this very moment. The .doc file resides in SEGA's otherwise benign "news" directory. Now, it's very possible that the document could have been uploaded in jest as an Internet prank. But assuming it's real, then these meeting minutes between SEGA and Sony on August 5th reveal quite a few tantalizing details. Chiefly, that Sony will be launching its PS3 motion controller in Japan in March of 2010, Spring elsewhere. There's also discussion of PlayStation 2 emulation on the PS3 with a note that "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)." Want more? Then hit up the read link and download the document yourself. Else, you'll just have to hope for news from the Tokyo Game Show kicking off Thursday.

PlayStation 3 Motion Controller Slated for March, Dreamcast Titles Inbound? [Unconfirmed]

According to a legit-looking leaked document leaked from Sega, Sony is planning on launching their PS3 motion controller this March in Japan with the US release coming sometime in spring. From the document:

Motion Controller
Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.

PS3 and PSP interoperability? I could imagine a bundle with the motion controller and a PSP to replace the Dual Shock 3...if only it had all the necessary buttons.

The other potentially big piece of news here refers to Dreamcast titles coming to PSN (PS2 games are technically mentioned as well). Apparently Sony is courting Sega for their old games.

DC Digital Titles
If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they're interested in having exclusively.
If we give them a long period of exclusivity they'll give us more marketing support.

Note that the "long period of exclusivity" is not permanent exclusivity, meaning that a slew of Dreamcast titles may be on their way to other platforms as well. [Objectif Sega via NeoGAF via Kotaku]

Square Enix President predicts Wii HD for 2011, doesn’t see big impact for PS3 and Xbox motion controls

Sure, they sound like the words of a man who hasn't begun development of any motion-controlled titles for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but we're still intrigued by President of Square Enix Yoichi Wada's statement (he's the guy on the left) that the motion control additions to the PS3 and Xbox 360 aren't that big of deal. He cites the other "pillars" of console use (like video playback) that somehow make motion controls a minor player -- though we'd say the Wii's sales numbers would beg to differ. Speaking of the Wii, Yoichi thinks all three major consoles will start to look rather the same by 2011, when believes the Wii followup will hit the market -- in line with other rumors we've heard for the "Wii HD." Three "HD" consoles with similar input options and similar graphics output certainly sounds like a boon for developers, we just hope there are enough similarities in the control systems and enough "impact" in PS3 and Xbox motion control sales to make mega triple-platform motion-controlled blockbusters feasible.

Sony R&D explains some background on the PlayStation motion controller
Well, it's no GameGun, but we hear this "PlayStation motion controller" thing from Sony is going to be "kind of a big deal." The SCEA R&D team was kind enough to put together some behind the scenes footage detailing a bit of the genesis of the controller and some of its technical prowess, and according to Sony this should be just enough of a calculated tease to get us excited for TGS in late September. We feel so manipulated. Video is after the break.

PS3 motion controller’s launch titles will work single-wandedly
The PlayStation 3 motion controller's actual launch date is still shrouded in multiple layers of mystery, but when it finally does make it to market, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida wants to assure you that you won't be needing to purchase two wands for any games -- at least at first. All launch titles will work with just one motion controller and camera, but there will be some options for those wanting to dual-wand -- "experiences will be enhanced if you purchase a second," he said. That does leave open the possibility of future titles mandating a dual-wand setup -- we wouldn't be surprised if some sword fighting simulators required it -- but at least you can dip your toes in first and see if that bucket of plastic game peripherals really has room for more.

New Sony Motion Controller video reveals pinata smashing, hair styling
Sony may not have done another full-on demonstration of its Motion Controller at this week's big Gamescom event, but it did at least put together a little video showing off some of its progress, and GameTrailers has now thankfully obtained the goods so everyone not there can have a peek. Of course, there's not exactly a whole lot in the way of actual new details, but we do get a glimpse of plenty of new potential applications for the controller, including using it as a paint brush, a magic wand, a torch, a bat to smash a pinata, or even an all-in-one hairstyling tool. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.
