Ohoho, this is a mod that tickles my funnybone. Remember the Dell Mini 3i Android phone, destined for China only? Some dude has taken his Inspiron Mini netbook to pieces and turned it into his take on the Dell phone.
Because after all, who doesn't want a 10.1-inch Dell phone? Err... [Shanzai via JkkMobile]

The Wall Street Journal | Email this | Comments Dell Mini 3iX has WiFi, 3G, and a number of leaked UI photos
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 3rd, 2009
You know what's ridiculous? Modern smartphones without WiFi (why hello there, Pixi and Tour). Looks like Dell's getting the message with the supposed Brazil-bound Mini 3iX, which as far as we can tell is the Mini 3i as it should've been -- same specs, plus WiFi and 3G connectivity. The OPhone-esque user interface also seems to have gone through some changes, at least cosmetically, and Cellular Cafe has the vivid imagery -- so might this be the little guy rumored to be coming to AT&T, or will we get the 2G variant instead? How about we just skip this one altogether and get the Streak?Filed under: Cellphones

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on October 8th, 2009
We heard rumors this week that Dell's Mini 3i Android phone could come to the U.S, and now the Wall Street Journal says it's AT&T who asked Dell to tweak the phone—and the result may arrive next year.
The WSJ says sources "briefed on the plans" say the phone will be similar to the touchscreen Mini 3i, "but has some different features". That syncs up with Tuesday's rumors that the tweaked U.S version may add 3G connectivity, and an improved camera (5-megapixels instead of 3Mp).
If true, it would be AT&T's first Android phone, and a slight shift in focus away from the iPhone. Android also seems to be on a bit of a march recently: Verizon is readying Android phones (likely the HTC Desire/Hero and Motorola Tao/Droid), Sprint has the new Samsung Moment, and T-Mobile has added the Samsung Behond II to its range of Android phones. Interesting times for Android fans. Maybe analyst firm, Gartner, is on to something in predicting that Android will be the second-most used cellphone OS by 2012. [Wall Street Journal]

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on October 7th, 2009
We knew Dell's Mini 3i Android-based smartphone would be coming to China, but now Crunchgear hears that Dell might bring an altered version of the device Stateside.
The Chinese version of the phone was simply not fit for the US market, lacking 3G and Wi-Fi, but according to a tipster, Dell will change some of the internals before it debuts here. The tipster specifically names an improved camera (5MP, up from 3MP) but we'll assume that if the rumor is true, it'll also get a bump in the wireless department to 3G. Interestingly, Dell is said to be messing with Android's internals for some reason, making some apps incompatible, though we can't imagine what purpose that would serve other than customer frustration.
The phone is said to be thinner than the iPhone, though with a similar icon list and feels "plasticky, like the Palm Pre," which would be fairly in line with the Chinese model. This is unconfirmed for now, but we'll keep you updated if we hear anything else on Dell's possibly entering the US smartphone arena. [Crunchgear]

Chinese site Sina has snapped a ton of clear photos of the Dell Mini 3i, their China-only Android-based smartphone. It looks like a genetic experiment between the Palm Pre and the iPhone.
Looking at the new photos, the Dell Mini 3i has a 3.0-megapixel camera, GPS with included software, and a horrendous interface. [Sina]
