Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 28th, 2009

Thanko is back with yet another device, and good thing this one is not silly or impractical, but offers those bitten by the digital entertainment bug another option to view all their favorite movies and listen to their well-loved tunes. The Thanko HDD Media Player doubles up as a cradle for 2.5” and 3.5” SATA hard drives while featuring an SD memory card slot that is able to handle up to 16GB SDHCs. Connectivity options are aplenty here, where you can choose from HDMI, Component (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr), S/VGA and Composite, allowing you to enjoy it over a computer or a TV. Apart from that, you get a one-touch backup button for easy duplication of your essential data.

Cowon Preparing V5 HD PMP With 720p Video Playback [PMPs]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 22nd, 2009
Unless you've been sucked into the iBubble, you'll probably know by now that Cowon makes some pretty terrific PMPs, like the S9. Its latest model, the V5 HD, has just been outed and promises 720p viewing on its 4.8-inch screen.
It's not just video playback which gets a look-in with the V5, as Cowon's also included an RSS reader, Flash games and a T-DMB TV tuner if you want to spring extra moolah for it. It runs Windows CE 6.0, and has up to 32GB of storage (albeit via the SD card slot, internal flash memory is just 8GB.)
The touchscreen TFT LCD has 800 x 480 pixels, with the overall measurements listed as 128 x 82 x 15.7mm. Most impressively, the battery life is quoted as 45hrs for audio, though there's just 10hrs for video. A HDMI output will let you hook it up to your telly, which is one advantage over the S9.
It'll cost 299,000 KRW (around $253) when it goes on sale in South Korea on January 1st, but expect it in other markets soon after, in black, pink, white and silver colorways. [TheDarkSide via Anything But iPod]
Sony NWZ-S745 on sale in Canada, US given cold shoulder
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 15th, 2009
We don't know about you, but every time we hear of a Walkman, we think of the old school cassette players, and are left strangely disappointed by the slinky modern variants and their tons of storage. The 16GB S745, which has absolutely nothing to do with Mickey Mouse we assure you, has entered North American retail channels, only it seems to have skipped the US for its more peace-loving neighbor up north. Eagle-eyed Canadian shoppers have spotted the more advanced version of the S740 on sale in Sony Style stores (for 200 CAD or 188 in real American currency), replete with a 2-inch screen, noise-canceling earphones, and an unhealthily thin case. Still, suspicions abound that Sony is merely waiting for CES to roll around to make its big US unveiling, but if you really can't wait it's not like driving up to Canadia would be that terrible anyway.Sony NWZ-S745 on sale in Canada, US given cold shoulder originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 07:01:00 EST. Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 27th, 2009
A few days ago, LaCie introduced the “most complete HD multimedia hard drive player”. The LaCinema Classic HD is designed by Neil Poulton, and allows users to browse, play, and share HD media collections from anywhere in the home, directly on HDTV.
The LaCinema Classic HD has an external hard drive to load media from your Mac or PC. From there, it becomes quite easy to connect the HDTV for “instant playback” of your video, music, or even photo files. Did I mention that it holds more than 1 terabyte of storage? Well, it does.
It can also work in sync with your home network, which can act as a media server to stream content to compatible players like the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. It plays DivX format from high-quality MKV H264 video format via HDMI 1.3 connection. It also has “uncompromising support for Dolby Digital audio quality enhances the LaCinema Classic HD, as well as your entertainment viewing experience”.
The LaCinema Classic HD has a “timeless and sleek design” that includes a remote control and easy navigation. There is a front USB port for connecting to a USB drive or digital camera.
You should be able to get the LaCinema Classic HD for about $249.99 on the LaCie website. Unfortunately, it is out of stock for now.
