Rhythm Video Games Quickly Entering Twilight of Their One-Hit Wonder Career [Video Games]

Fake musicians the world over are increasingly casting aside their fake instruments, reports video game stats go-to firm the NPD Group. Apparently, the short era of plastic rhythm game instruments and accessories is leveling off.

Indeed, the numbers are tanking for both major games in this space, and hard, although analyst Michael Pachter says they should level off at a "healthy" $500 million/year.

Reports Reuters, the recently released and much ballyhooed The Beatles game moved 800,000 units to date, which is 200,000 short of what analysts expected it would sell. Guitar Hero 5, on the other hand, sold just 500,000 this year. The number pales in comparison to the 1.4 million pieces of plastic Guitar Hero III managed to sell during its first month on store shelves. DJ Hero, the latest in the pseudo-instrument series, also disappointed.

Come to think of it, that drum set, when viewed the right way, kind of reminds me of sad face. How apt. And how timely! Mark's latest shooting challenge is all about finding faces in strange places.

In other news, landfills report they'll be very busy in 2010. [Reuters via CrunchGear]

Intel fires employees out of cannons, flirts with supervillainy

If you had to play a five-note jingle in the most extravagant way possible, how would you go about it? Intel’s answer is to propel five “engineers” through the air and into specially prepared jumbo-sized tubular bells. The result is the familiar “Intel Inside” tune, and for extra flair points the big bad monopolist also throws in a countdown done in Finnish which you’ll definitely want to see and hear. The video lies after the break and yes, of course it’s a fake — even the engineers are just hired actors.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIV: Zoho’s E72 is made in China, has Finland doing a double-take
Having trouble getting your hands on that Nokia E72? Perhaps you favor a handset with a TV tuner? Zoho's KIRF E72 features the aforementioned tuner, dual sim, QWERTY keypad, WiFi, JAVA, FM tuner, and both rear and front-facing 1.3MP cameras. Rest assured, the UI looks nothing like what you'd get with from Finland. But did we mention that you could watch TV on the thing? Video after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIII: faux MacBook Air review (video)
Our good friends at Shanzai.com have recently got their hands on what they believe to be the king of all MacBook Air KIRFs, and put it through the ringer. Expecting a laugh riot? Not so fast -- what we have here is a pretty decent netbook, apparently. Features include an Intel Atom N280, 13-inch display, good build quality, a form factor similar in size and weight to Apple's original, a real chicklet keyboard, a remote control, and I/O options rivaling the original (including an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and HDMI). Not bad for $260. But don't take our word for it -- peep the video after the break for the whole sordid tale.

Criminal Charges Loom For Balloon Boy Hoax Mastermind Richard Heene [Balloon Brat]

Karma's a bunch of hooey, but in cases like this I can understand the appeal: Richard Heene, the arrogant, self-centered con artist behind the "Balloon Boy" hoax, is about to be charged with a crime. Updated.

Authorities haven't said what the charges will be, exactly, but here's hoping whatever they are they involve this asshat paying back every cent he owes the authorities after they chased down that now infamous—and empty—Mylar balloon over Colorado. At least.

Lest you doubt this is actually going to happen, know that police searched the Heene home early Sunday morning. They also scheduled a 1 p.m. EST press conference, where they will update us all on what's going down. "We anticipate criminal charges will be filed sometime in the near future," said Sheriff Jim Alderden in an interview with CNN this morning.

You wanted publicity, Richard? You got it.

Update: Reader John's supplied us with the 911 call from that fateful day, if that's your thing. [CNN, Gawker]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXIX: Genuine Android shipping on a counterfeit Storm

Looks like someone in Shenzhen had time to kill overnight at the Storm factory -- and they've put it to good use. Instead of giving us a faux-BlackBerry with a horribly mangled KIRFed-out UI (or at most WinMo) what we have here is a genuine clone with a trackball thrown in for good measure running honest-to-goodness Android 1.5. Dubbed the Broncho A1, this guy features a 600MHz CPU, 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, and an FM radio. That's the good news. The bad? 128MB RAM isn't going to do much for you, app-wise. Oh, well. Price and ship date to be announced at a later date. Get a closer look in the gallery below.

China’s KIRF marketplace captured on hidden camera

Love 'em, loathe 'em, or love to loathe 'em as you will, but the humble KIRF has a big place in our geek DNA -- that's why we were tickled when the gang over at Shanzhai.com paid the markets of Shenzhen, China, a 60 Minutes-esque visit complete with hidden camera. Although we've been hearing tales for years now about the legendary stalls deep in the heart of KIRFdom, Western visitors have rarely made the trip -- until now! And this clip has it all, including one of our all-time favorite head scratchers: the Buddha handset. But don't take our word for it -- grab yourself some pop corn and move on past the break to see it for yourself.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXIII: MacBook Air loses two inches, adds a Windows key
If we've learned one thing 'round here, it's that the KIRFsters love taking on Apple. And you know, at first glance this KIRFacious take on the MacBook Air doesn't seem half bad. Of course, check it out in profile and it looks a lot more like your average netbook than it does Cupertino's ultraportable -- but at least the shanzai manufacturer in question as thrown in a few things that were neglected in the original, including: two USB ports, a removable battery, and a PCIe slot for a 3G module. That said, they also went with an 11.1-inch display (as opposed to the Air's 13-incher), which could be a good thing or not, depending on your POV. Of course, with a 1.6GH Atom processor and 1GB RAM, this thing isn't exactly a workhorse, though it's safe to assume that the price point will fall far below that of the "real deal." But don't take our word for it -- check out a couple more views of the thing after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXII: Nokla strikes again with E81 rehash
Due to Nokia's continued dismissal of the ripe-for-the-picking E81 model number, the diligent folks at "Nokla" (fresh off their E97 design win) have seen it fit to issue a second handset under that fake moniker. Surprisingly, this one actually boasts a rather unique swivel design, a QWERTY keyboard and some decent specs. There's even a mirror on the swivel-up back (we hear that women love mirrors), along with a hole at the swivel hinge for working a lanyard through. We'd venture to say it's the best E81 Nokia never made.
