Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on August 27th, 2009

Here's what we do know: out of the gate, it seems the EGG will only be running Creative's homegrown Plaszma OS, though Android support is forthcoming. The Plaszma SDK is being rolled out in three phases spanning the rest of 2009, and some pretty important stuff -- Bluetooth support, for example -- won't even be available to developers until the third phase, which is a pretty strong indication that Zii-powered products intended for consumer consumption probably won't be around in time for the holidays. For the moment, there isn't any indication on when devs will have access to Android support libraries, which we think might be where Zii's true value lies, because let's be honest -- the world realistically doesn't need another target platform for mobile.
Interestingly, Creative is using Zii to actively target China-based devs that it says "may not have brands but have an insatiable appetite for ready-to-go technologies, and can adapt these technologies very quickly to new market opportunities" (in other words, KIRFers) through its "Shanzai program," a mix of prototype boards and support packages that it says will help small businesses bring products to market faster. If that means we can get the next great N97 clone running Android in record time, we're all for it. Check out the full Plaszma SDK roadmap in the gallery below.

Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on August 10th, 2009

Every so often, we come across a gadget (or five) that’s so offensive, so absurd that we simply can’t help but stick it in our back pocket and show it to the general public. Today, we’re rounding up the worst of the worst once again, proving that there literally is no end to the spewing of gadget-related garbage that comes from unknown caverns in undisclosed corners of the universe. We mean, just listen to these products: “fried eggs night light,” “Bic lighter spy camera,” “hungry caterpillar USB hub,” and “half-eaten chocolate mouse.” Does those even sound like kit that any partially sane individual would purchase? No, no it doesn’t. Have a gander while shaking your head furiously below, and feel free to drop a vote for the king of the crap while venting in comments below. Trust us, it’s therapeutic.

Hmmm, yes, I would like an iPhone with a fried egg sunny side up, and bacon. Well done. Crispy. Almost burnt. Oh, and a cafe au lait, please. Thanks.
Oh, and the egg is a pouch. How cute is that? Perhaps enough to pay $35 for it. [Etsy via Walyou]

Creative Zii Egg Android PMP Makes Its Hands-On Debut [PMP]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on July 30th, 2009
Creative's Zii, which is either an extremely exciting platform for Android PMPs or a boring developers' tool (nobody knows!) has turned up in CNET Asia's offices. As you can imagine, it didn't take long before they got a little handsy.
Like Creative's introduction video before it, CNET's hands-on is more about seeing the hardware than showing off new features—this is the same Android we've been using since last year, after all. There's a lot of interesting stuff going on inside the Egg—720p video playback support by means of on in-house chip, promises of long battery life, the expandable storage potential—but most of this isn't apparent in a short demo like this.
What we're left with is an attractive piece of hardware that is just begging to live out its destiny as the first mainstream Android PMP, but which Creative can't seem to make up its mind about, at least publicly. The Zii really looks like a consumer products, from its styling to its specs, and I'd love or Creative to take it to market, or to sell the design to someone else to do the same. But even though it seems obvious that such a product would represent the first real competitor to the iPod Touch, their line, still, is that this is for developers, and that the "platform" could be available to manufacturers, though apparently, not this specific piece of hardware. Whether they're just tied up in their own words or this is really their plan, there's a market gap that needs filling, and the Zii looks like it could fill it. Click through for video.
