I Bet This Yacht Can Also Jump Into Hyperspace [Concept]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on January 1st, 2010
I have seen really amazing ship designs, like the impressive kind-of-Nautlish Ghost ramming yacht, the weird transforming Ikkar, the luxurious perfect dream-aparment-that-is-really-a-boat, and the classic schooner America. The Enso, however, is the first that looks from another planet:
I someone told me that the Enso Catamaran is really a secret version of Burt Rutan's Spaceshiptwo I wouldn't be suprised. The 140-foot Wingsailed Enso Catamaran, whoever, was designed by student Zack Stephanchick. Zack's real name is Grørrrkzyngy Aarkaantar, from the Vega 4 system. You are not tricking me Zack. I mean Grørrrkzyngy, you weird tentacle-nosed alien you. [Coroflot Born Rich]

Yanko Design | Email this | Comments OLPC shows off absurdly thin XO-3 concept tablet for 2012 (update: XO-1.5 and XO-1.75 coming first)
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 23rd, 2009
Update: According to our man Nicholas Negroponte, who took time out of his busy schedule to email us with the info, there are two other variations of the XO headed our way before we see the XO-3. Nick says we'll see the XO-1.5 appear in January for around $200 -- an update to the current version. As we'd heard before, the 1.5 iteration will swap a VIA CPU for the current AMD one, and will double the speed as well as quadruple both the DRAM and Flash memory of the current version. Furthermore, he says that in early 2011 the XO-1.75 (replacing that psychotically awesome 2.0 dual screen model) will make its appearance, and will sport rubber bumpers on the outer casing, an 8.9-inch touchscreen display inside, and will run atop a Marvell ARM processor which will enable two times the speed at a quarter of the power usage. That version will sell for somewhere in the $175 range. Then, no 2.0... straight on to the XO-3.0!

Forbes, Press release | Email this | Comments Fleximus Camera Concept Values Simplicity and Bendability [Concept]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 23rd, 2009
Art Lebedev is known for designing products that serve as elegant solutions for complex problems. If your problem is, "I can't figure out how to use this damn camera," his Fleximus concept is the solution for you.
The Fleximus, designed to take photos and video, features a bendable body that can be used with a built-in viewfinder or with an attachable 3" display. The camera's simplified controls and flexible body let you shoot at "angles never imaginable before": snaked under a door, curved around a corner, or, as the man below is attempting, sighted directly up your anus.
Sadly, like many of Lebedev's designs, the Fleximus will likely be a bit too cool for any company to put into production. [artlebedev.com]
Transparent Truck System Could Actually Save Lives [Concept]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 22nd, 2009
Art Lebedev calls this simple invention—a camera that takes images from the front of a truck to show it on screens in the back—Transparentius. I call it geeneeuzz.
I don't know why this drawing shows a tank at the front of the truck, but I guess that in Russia people drive T-90s like in the US people drive Fords. I wish the technology was so cheap that this could be implemented for real, because I'm sure it would save a lot of lives on the road. [Engadget]

Berg | Email this | Comments One Day You’ll Be Able to Touch, Sniff, and Taste the Entire Internet [Design]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 17th, 2009
Wish you could touch, sniff, or lick something you see online? This concept will eventually make that wish come true as it spits out a scented flavor strip while you slip your hand inside the device to cop a feel.
I know I can't be the only one thinking that this device, dubbed Sense, would be used in combination with some not-so-safe-for-work websites, but it's absolutely brilliant even if you skip those applications.
Basically the device would recreate temperature, roughness, softness, hardness, and pressure in order to let you "touch" whatever's on your screen, while a special "smell and flavor-ink micro-printer" would print out lil' wax strips which melt on your tongue for a flavor and scent-filled finish.
I don't think I could see myself using this thing on a regular basis, if it ever gets made, but there would definitely be some potential for a few hours of amusement and virtual boob-squeezing. And maybe something less productive, too. [Design Blog]
Synaptics introduce Fuse cellphone concept
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 17th, 2009

Synaptics Incorporated recently introduced the Fuse concept cellphone which demonstrated where the future of user interaction is headed, and it seems that the iPhone could be in for a challenge. After all, the Fuse will introduce multiple interface technologies for the first time, among them including multi-touch capacitive sensing, haptic feedback, 3-D graphics, and force, grip, and proximity sensing. Are you Apple fanboys quaking just yet? Of course, it is way too early to tell whether the Fuse is able to usurp the iPhone since there are still many other things to consider about, especially its ease-of-use and the all important App Store competitor.
While the touchscreen display is almighty in this day and age, we must remember that Synaptics was first to introduce the touchscreen way back in August 2006, thanks to their award-winning Onyx cellphone concept. Other phone manufacturers have long followed suit, and Synaptics has gone on to the next level by tackling the issue of single-handed usage with the need to look at the screen by coming up with the Fuse. The Fuse will boast innovative sensing technologies that surround the entire device to enable quick, intuitive, single-handed navigation. Take for example its grip sensing capability that relies on force and capacitive touch sensors on the sides of the phone, where users can execute pan and scroll functions in a jiffy. Apart from that, the Fuse is first off the blocks to introduce 2D navigation from the back of the phone! This will allow one to enjoy effective and fun single-handed control without having to obstruct the display.
It makes us wonder when will Synaptics actually roll out the Fuse cellphone concept, moving it to the production stage as we’re pretty sure it is able to make more than just a ripple in the industry’s ocean. After all, modern cellphones are all about progress and change, and the Fuse is definitely a game changer – assuming it ever enters production, that is.

GE Designs a High Tech Sleigh For Santa [Design]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 16th, 2009
Santa has a "magic sack" and flying reindeer, but his sleigh is kind of old fashioned. GE has thought about this momentous problem and has come up with a tricked out solution using all kinds of proprietary technology.
Using this interactive app, you can virtually explore the sleigh and learn more about the gadgetry GE has built-in. They have thought of everything—including a wireless medical sensor that keeps tabs on the old man's breathing and heartrate. I mean he is like 200 years old. You never know when he will have a heart attack, fall from the sleigh and crash land in some kids living room. Haha...traumatic. [GE]
Ikkar Transforming Yacht Requires Supervillain Spandex Suit [Ships]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 16th, 2009
I'm glad that the Ikkar—a yacht that can open its hull until it looks like a trimaran—is just a really sleek concept. After all, the only people who can actually build it are Dr.Doom, Magneto, and Larry Ellison.
I wish it was real, however. The Ikkar allows for 50 passengers, with suites that have terraces facing the ocean. Stationary or at low speed, the Ikkar can open its hull sideways, deploying two large dock surfaces that allow people to walk and enjoy the sun. On the top, a solar sail—equipped with photovoltaic cells—grabs energy to help power the ship. Inside, a teleporting machine can transport you anywhere in the planet, while an anti-matter cannon could evaporate any enemies out of the water.
I'm just making this thing even better, ok? [Luxury Issues via Born Rich]
