Snowflake-shaped photovoltaic cells bring the holiday cheer
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 24th, 2009

Because of their size and shape, the cells are well-suited to unusual applications, and researchers envision mass-production of the cells for use on building-integrated tents or clothing, so campers (or military personnel) could recharge their cell phones on the go. Researchers also think that these particles will be inexpensive to produce, but there's no word on when they'll be ready for consumer application. We'll keep you posted -- but hit the source link for more a more detailed description.

Diffus | Email this | Comments Turtles and Rats Will Run Away When I Wear This Hoodie [Geek Fashion]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News, Technology on December 21st, 2009
While this hoodie will make me look almost as snazzy as the oh-so-evil Shredder, odds are that I won't have any more success against do-gooder turtles than he. Maybe I should just wear a pretty, girly dress instead.
Failing evil plots aside, the Shredder hoodie actually looks rather cozy with all those crazy "blades" and it's yours for only $60. I just wish I had come across it before I'd finished all my Christmas shopping. [80s Tees via You Bent My Wookie via Geekologie]
Duct Tape Hoodie Is Basically Geek Chain Mail…Err, Geekier Chain Mail [Fashion]

Duct tape, Man's greatest micro engineering accomplishment. It's strong, waterproof and it glows like some magical metal shark skin alloy. Why aren't we wearing this stuff?
Over at Instructables, one young visionary has shared his technique for weaving a hoodie from these godly adhesive strips. He says the resulting garment is quite warm and impervious to rain. And, if we might add, it's quite handy if you ever need to half-assedly fix something and you're too lazy to grab a roll of tape. [Instructables]
How To Make Any Pair Of Gloves Work With a Touchscreen [DIY]
Posted by: Gadget Boy in Gadget News on November 26th, 2009
There are commercial gloves designed to work with touchscreens, but you can achieve the same functionality with your current pair of gloves using a needle and some conductive thread.
The iPhone screen is capacative, meaning that it requires your finger to complete a circuit in order to work. So, by sewing some conductive thread in small patches on the fingers of your gloves (a circle of about 1/4" or 6mm in diameter is recommended) and larger patches on the inside area of the fingertip, you should be able to use your touchscreen with an acceptable degree of accuracy.
Still, I have to imagine that this modification would be useless on anything other than tight-fitting gloves. The thick gloves that actually keep your hands warm would be far too bulky. [Instructables via Lifehacker]

Sonic Fabric Neckties Are Actually Playable [Clothing]

The music may be horrible, but if you rub a tape head over these ties you can actually hear jumbled sound collages recorded from the NYC metro system. This is possible because the ties are 50% audio cassette tape.
If you have $90 to spend on one of the ties, and you are willing to sacrifice an old Walkman for the project, you can make this a fixture of your formal wardrobe. Of course, walking around with a broken Walkman asking every one to rub you with it is not recommended. [Supermarket via Gadget Lab]

I don't why my belt crashed. I went to the restroom and then zipped up and then shook my hips like Elvis in the mirror...wait, Belt 7 isn't Elvis compatible. That explains everything. [GeekGoneChic via Crunchgear]
