Wait a second -- a business-centric laptop... with style?
Dell's 15.6-inch Vostro 1015, which was announced alongside the still-unavailable (in the US, anyway) Vostro 1014 and Vostro 1088
back in August, has just emerged for purchase, and the relatively attractive case and low starting price definitely has our attention. Granted, the $429 base model gets saddled with a 2.2GHz Celeron 900 processor, but $629 buys you a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T6670, Windows 7 Professional, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB (5400RPM) hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner, 2 megapixel webcam, integrated WiFi, GMA 4500MHD graphics and a 6-cell battery. Anyone down for stroking their inner suit?
[Thanks, Peter]

Lenovo's
ThinkPad SL510 is just one of
many new lappies hitting the market with
Windows 7 in tow, but unlike most of the consumer-oriented machines, this pup is aimed squarely at that fellow over there looking mighty uncomfortable in the suit. Their test version, which included a 2.53GHz CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD and a $1,024 price tag, was found to be a real champion in terms of performance. The machine itself starts at just $520, and while the upgrades here definitely had an impact, they were also pleased with the multitouch trackpad, overall typing experience and bundled business tools. The only knocks? The "bulky, staid design" and low screen resolution, but something tells us a few of you won't see the former as a negative. Hit the read link for the full skinny.

Now, let's be clear about one thing: these are
laptops for business -- so the casual need not apply. That said, HP's just announced the Compaq 515 and 610, and, like most office parties, they're pretty boring. The 515 is 14.1-incher with an AMD Athlon X2 or Turion X2 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics, up to 3GB of DDR2 RAM, and an up to 250GB of hard drive. The 15.6-inch Compaq 610 boasts a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron Dual-Core CPUs, Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics, up to 3GB of DDR2 RAM, and an up to 250GB hard drive. Both of these suit-loving laptops boast DVD burners, LED backlight, WiFi and Ethernet LAN, three USB ports, ExpressCard and secure digital card slots, plus a VGA output. Starting price for the 515 is $429, while the 610 runs $449 for the base configuration.

We'd already come to grips with the fact that a
Vostro 1220 was indeed on the way, and now Dell's own Japanese branch has confirmed it. Over in the Land of the Rising Sun, the 12.1-inch business laptop has gone legit, bringing with it Intel processor options (a 2.20GHz Celeron or 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, namely), 1GB or 2GB of RAM, a WXGA (1,200 x 800) glossy display, 4-cell battery (a 6-cell is available), WiFi, three USB 2. sockets, FireWire, gigabit Ethernet, VGA output, ExpressCard slot, a multicard reader and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. The unit should start shipping soon in various configurations, with a lower-end build tagged at ¥79,980 ($837); needless to say, we're expecting a US announcement to follow in short order.
