‘Princess and the Pea’ Alarm Clock Makes It Impossible to Stay in Bed [Alarm Clock]

This homemade "Princess and the Pea" alarm clock is hooked up to a compressor that will literally toss you out of bed if you hit the snooze button. Not exactly subtle, but it sure is effective. [ProjectPage via Make]

Bang & Olufsen’s multifunctional BeoTime gets carefully handled
It's rare that we get to see magic wand-shaped remote controls, and rarer still for them to have integrated alarm clocks. The Bang & Olufsen BeoTime is just that sort of exotic specimen, and its $375 touch-sensitive aluminum body has now been tested for our amusement. Being able to turn on your other B&O products by simply grabbing the remote or setting an alarm for the desired time struck positive notes, and those bite-sized displays earned praise too. With automatic backlighting, built-in accelerometer, and full channel readouts, they ensured the minimum of strain for the user (which is probably still pretty high considering they're tiny!). There wasn't much to complain about, but at that price point you wouldn't expect it either. Full hands-on gallery can be found at the read link.

iLuv ships weather-watching iMM183 dual dock iPod / iPhone alarm clock
It belts out severe weather alerts as storms are barreling towards your domicile. It acts as a decent bedroom stereo. And it wakes you and the SO up to your own favorite jams -- all while charging your iPod or iPhone throughout the night. If those amenities sound like must-haves in your own life, you might be interested in knowing that iLuv's iMM183 dual dock alarm clock is now shipping, nearly a full year after being originally announced at CES. The pain? $149.99 -- but hey, that's a small price to pay to keep your dear media player / handset out of a tornado's eye, right?

Sony Gadgets Of All Ages Stripped Down And Photographed [Gadget Porn]

iFixIt and Wired got together to cajole people into tearing down their favorite Sony products. And while autopsies usually give me the creeps, I'll admit that seeing this hardware spread apart left me hot under the collar.

Among my favorites were the alarm clock, the CyberShot, the old-school Discman (I have one like it hiding in a drawer!), the PSP, and, of course, the Playstation 3.

Those are the Sony toys which got my attention, but you can check out the rest of the gadget porn over at Wired, and then maybe make some of your own. [Wired]

Mr. Wake Robot Alarm Clock Is An Untouchable Morning Menace [Robots]

What if Clocky the alarm clock didn't just run away from you in the morning? What if he could sense your presence and evade capture with an IR sensor? That's the annoying idea behind Mr. Wake.

Of course, looking at these videos it is plain to see the Mr. Wake is a moron. I'm pretty sure I could capture him even when my eyes are half open and I'm stumbling around the room. Still, it's a good proof of concept. Perhaps you can use Vadim Ryazanov's notes on the build to make Mr. Wake more elusive—although I have no earthly idea why you would want to torture yourself like this. Ask Engadget: Best iPhone 3G (3GS) alarm clock / radio?
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Bora (from Turkey, he'll have you know), who is sick and tired of waking up to bleeps, wails and static-filled tunes not on his iPhone.
"I own an iPhone 3G and I'm looking for a decent speaker / alarm clock for it. I am going to listen music in a mid-sized room, so I want nice quality speakers with solid bass. I also want to use it as an alarm clock, so it would be great if there is such a feature. The price can be low-mid to mid-high range. I was looking at the Klipsch iGroove SXT; it's powerful, slick and the reviews are good, but it doesn't have an alarm clock feature. It's no deal breaker if I can set it up from the iPhone, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm open to recommendations. Thanks!"
Don't front -- we know a big swath of you loyal iPhone owners out there also have some sort of docking alarm clock / radio, so why not share your experience(s) with yours? It's easy, we promise.

Traffic Light Alarm Clock

traffic_light_clockMan, I had a difficult time getting up this morning, and just had to sleep in. Something tells me I would have been completely awake if I had the Traffic Alarm Clock.

Yeah, we have reported on many strange alarm clocks at Coolest Gadgets, and has the startle factor of the Lifetone Bedside Fire Alarm Clock. However, this is the first alarm clock that I have seen with a 40mm speaker to wake the user up.

The user gets to choose between four sounds, and one of them is traffic noise. I’m not certain what the ones who live near traffic are going to do, because they are probably used to it by now.

Yeah, I don’t know what type of room this would really go well with. This would be furniture that Ty Pennington would use for his “special project” that he does on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

I can just see it: “Once I found out that little Johnny likes cars, I did his whole room with a theme of traffic lights”. I’ve always wondered how those themed rooms end up after the cameras have stopped rolling.

But I digress. If you want this traffic light, feel free to lay down $27 for it on the November 25.

Sony ICF-CL75iP alarm clock / digital frame / iPod dock a surprisingly attractive assimilation
We'll be honest, it takes a whole lot to get us excited about iPhone / iPod docks or digital picture frames these days, but congratulations Sony, you've managed to pierce through our hardened hearts with the ICF-CL75iP Dream Machine. Sony Insider brings word of the actually quite handsome bedside attraction, an assimilation of those aforementioned products with an alarm clock to boot. We're looking at a 7-inch WVGA LCD screen, 1GB built-in memory, FM / AM radio, and a retractible dock -- in case you don't feel like capitalizing on the total synergistic package. Photos can be pulled directly from the Apple handheld or loaded via USB, and your wake-up options include built-in presets, a customizable 10-second voice recording, or the iPod / iPhone itself. Our only knock at this point is the minimal codec support -- MP3 and WMA for audio, and MP4, M-JPEG, and AVI for video -- but if the $149.95 price on a cached SonyStyle listing stays accurate, we can be a little forgiving. In fact, throw in Chumby widget support and we'll be downright smitten -- make it happen, Sony.

LEGO of my Clock Radio!

lego_clockradioIt seems like every week at Coolest Gadgets we cover some sort of Lego-based gadget. Last week, it was the Lego Wind up Dynamo Torch. This week, it is this Lego Alarm Clock.

As you can see, there is very little Lego in the Lego Alarm Clock, but, in its defense, it does look like a 2 x 1 brick. I’ve seen other products that were an homage to the name of Lego, but most of them were not endorsed by the giant Danish toy company. The Lego Alarm Clock has Lego written all over it, on every single bumpy part, or “stud”.

Speaking of studs, those two on top don’t look like they would fit into any Legos that I have ever owned, and this includes the Duplo and Quatro collection. No, the purpose of those two knobs is to be knobs for adjusting the volume and tuning of the radio.

Too bad the top of the Lego Alarm Clock isn’t a baseplate. Then the user could put some of his or her best Lego creations atop this guy. As it is, I believe that the Lego Alarm Clock is some accessory designed for some kid’s room, just in time for back to school sales.

If you don’t believe me, then go to your nearest Wal-Mart and you’ll probably find it in the same aisle with the matching sheets, towels, and bedcovers. If you like it, be prepared to spend about $29.97 for it.

Philips HF3490 Wake-up Light is also a bedside lamp, iPod dock

Did you know that waking up by natural light is a lot less stressful than doing it with sound? Yes, apparently your toast tastes better too. Philips has long been a proponent of light alarms and, in an effort to stay hip with the kids, it's added a detachable iPod / iPhone dock to its latest offering. The HF3490 might never serve as your music station, but it tries hard, bringing an FM radio and some soothing sounds along. With 30 different levels of brightness and a "dusk simulator," this device has enough tweaking options to ensure you wake up just the way nature intended -- with birds chirping and soft sunlight on your pillow, all simulated by futuristically ugly electronics. If you can get over the $199 price, you can pre-order one for delivery on August 22.
